01 / THE IDEAFROM CURIOSITY TO EXPERIMENT
A lemon is not a battery.
Could it light an LED?
01 · QUESTION
Can an ordinary lemon produce electricity?
02 · HYPOTHESIS
Two different metals in lemon juice can create a voltage.
03 · TEST
Measure one lemon, connect several, then compare other produce.
My goal: build a simple cell and find out how it works.
02 / THE SCIENCETHE LEMON CELL
Different metals + lemon juice
make a simple electric cell.
− Zincreleases electrons+ Copperreceives electrons
01
Lemon juice is the electrolyte. It lets ions move inside the fruit.
02
Zinc releases electrons. They move through the external wire toward copper when the circuit is closed.
03
This chemical reaction creates a voltage that a multimeter can measure.
In 1800, Alessandro Volta built an early battery from pairs of different metals.
